Some Duluth families appear to be looking for alternatives to the Duluth school district this fall, with enrollment up at charter and private schools and down in the traditional public schools.

The Duluth Public Schools Academy began classes Monday with a 9 percent increase in students, setting a record with 1,070 students enrolled in its three Edison schools. The schools have a waiting list of more than 100 students, which officials say underlines the need for the new kindergarten through eighth-grade school its board is hoping to build.
