Job Description

The Director of Multilingual Programs and ELD K-12 is responsible for strengthening the quality and impact of programming for English language learners. The Director of Multilingual Programs and ELD K-12 will strive to ensure that all Hiawatha Academies scholars are empowered with the knowledge, character, and leadership skills to graduate from college and serve the common good. The Director of Multilingual Programs and ELD K-12 will work alongside the Academic Program subteam and under the Senior Academic Officer. Hiawatha Academies’ ELD Program is grounded in best practices, including co-teaching, co-planning, curriculum implementation, and sheltered courses. Hiawatha Academies has a large team of English Language Development teachers, with one per grade level across the network and additional at the high school. The Director of Multilingual Programs and ELD K-12 will be responsible for maintaining a substantial academic system designed to support multilingual learners in the most innovative and intentional way.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Duties
Strategy, Vision, and Leadership
Advise the Academic Director, Principals, and other key members of the network leadership team on the school model and program.
Effectively communicate and present critical school data at select Board of Directors and committee meetings.
Build coalitions and shared vision across the network to support intentional and equitable decisions on ELD programming.
Represent the organization externally, as necessary.

Program Development:
Lead the network-wide ELD professional learning plan, including:
Design of professional learning scope & sequence
Delivery of professional learning for all staff (including instructional leaders)
Monitor the impact of professional learning & provide coaching to address gaps
Strengthen programming to meet the needs of a diverse English-language learner population, including new-to-country students, students with limited or no formal education, long-term English learners, and students dually identified as an English-language learner and students with a disability.
Maintain district LIEP (language instructional, educational plan)
Support the development of schedules and instructional plans for ELD teachers across the network
Evaluate the current ELD program and determine opportunities to improve the quality and implementation of the program
Work with campus ELD staff to provide ongoing and aligned professional learning opportunities
Lead and collaborate with the ELD leadership team to improve ELD program growth and development.

Program Operations:
Monitor ELD program compliance with Title III and state programming requirements.
Oversee training and compliance for English Learner identification, parent notification, and exit processes.
Manage assessment processes across the network for screening and ACCESS testing in collaboration with the Network Operations Director and campuses.
Collaborate with the network MARSS Coordinator to ensure compliance with all MARSS reporting and accountability with the state of Minnesota for students who qualify as English Learners.
Coordinate accommodations determinations for MCA and other network assessments in collaboration with the Network Operations Director and campuses.

Qualifications

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree
Minimum of four years experience working in a school that is disrupting educational inequity with strong success
3+ years experience leading district-wide English Learner programming
Current license in K-12 Teaching English as a Second Language
3+ years of experience building and maintaining programming for new-to-country students
Proficiency in WIDA 2020 Standards
Demonstrated experience coaching ELD teachers

Other Qualifications:
K-12 School Administrator license
Bilingual (Spanish &/or Somali preferred)
Experience coaching instructional leaders on MLL best practices

Knowledge:
Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices
Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures

Acquired Skills:
Well-developed, clear communication and interpersonal skills that maintain a respectful, professional, and courteous manner
Conflict resolution skills
Ability to work with diverse student populations
