Job Description
FTE: 1.0 FTE
Job Summary: The Elementary School Counselor supports the academic, emotional, and social development of students in grades K–5. This role includes running individual and group interventions, collaborating with teachers and families, and promoting a safe and inclusive school environment.
The Elementary School Counselor will focus on obtaining and analyzing data to determine social-emotional needs of students at LILA’s Lower School (grades K - 5). The Elementary School Counselor will implement interventions that align with the IB Attributes to meet the social and emotional needs of students. The Elementary School Counselor will communicate with school staff and parents/guardians. This position also serves as liaison between students and federal, state, and local social and community support programs. The Elementary School Counselor will work under the guidance of the Director of Special Education and Student Services and the Lower School Principal.
Essential Functions:
Student Support
Identify at-risk students and implement intervention strategies.
Teach coping skills to students to help them regulate emotions.
Assist students in developing skills such as self-regulation, conflict resolution, decision-making, and effective communication.
Assist students with social-emotional learning; teach skills for student success.
Deliver Tier 2 and Tier 3 research-based interventions targeting students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
Collaboration
Work closely with school staff to identify student needs and support learning goals.
Consult with parents/guardians regarding student concerns and progress.
Refer students and families to outside resources when necessary.
Serve as a liaison with outside agencies;
Crisis Intervention
Provide crisis intervention and prevention for families and students.
Provide immediate support during school crises and assist with safety planning.
Serve as part of the school's crisis response team.
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain knowledge of current and emerging trends.
Maintain confidential records.
Participate in regular planning and professional development activities.
Support school-wide social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives.
Participate in Intervention Support Team meetings.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
State certification/licensure as a School Counselor.
Knowledge of child development, counseling techniques, and educational best practices.
Must be able to function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with students, parents/guardians, and staff.
Preferences:
Experience in a school setting is preferred.
International Baccalaureate experience preferred.
Spanish and/or Mandarin Chinese language proficiency is preferred, but not required.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires vocal communication, hearing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, use of hands to grasp and feel, and vision abilities including close, distance, and adjusting focus. Lifting/moving required frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds or more. Work occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and is generally in a moderately noisy location.
