Job Description

I. Job Summary
Assists and supports students and teacher(s) with classroom and school activities. Reports to assigned Classroom Teacher/s and Team Leader/s.

II. Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist teacher in meeting the needs of students in an appropriate manner.
• Assist teacher in developing student self-esteem through positive reinforcement.
• Fosters students self advocacy and independence skills.
• Assist in the supervision of large and small group activities.
• May assist teacher in correcting students’ work per directive.
• Updates the teacher daily on student progress as directed/requested.
• Assist teacher in maintaining individual records on student progress.
• Assist with classroom displays and preparation of teaching materials (e.g., copying, typing, and assembling displays).
• Assist teacher in clean-up of areas after art, cooking and other hands-on activities. • Assist in monitoring lunchroom, halls, playground, lavatory and bus areas. • Assists students with emergency drills and field trips.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher or Team Leader.

III. Job Outcome
• Provides the teacher with more time to instruct effectively and efficiently. • Provides a safer, more effective learning environment for the students.
• Maintains a positive attitude and style in dealing with others in a manner that contributes to the overall public relations of Metro Deaf School.
• Demonstrates appropriate and effective interpersonal relationships with students, parents and colleagues.

IV. Job Qualifications
• Knowledgeable and skilled at working with children in a positive, developmentally appropriate manner.
• Two years of college experience or AAS Degree or willing to become Highly Qualified under NCLB regulations (requires additional training).
• Must be fluent in American Sign Language.

Preferred:
• Positive experiences with individual children and comfortable with groups of children. • Comfortable being directed by another adult.
• Experience with office machines, classroom equipment and computers/printers etc.
• Willing to participate in staff development activities to become more knowledgeable and skilled as a paraprofessional.

Qualifications

- Two years study at an institution of higher education OR Associate Degree or higher OR successful completion of paraprofessional portfolio.
- Experience working with children ages 3-18
- Ability to work in teams
- Reliable and flexible
- Proficiency in and knowledge of ASL and written English

Metro Deaf School is a public charter school serving Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing children Birth to 21 years old. Metro Deaf School promotes academic excellence and social wellbeing for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing students using an ASL/English bilingual approach. The primary purpose is to empower our students to develop the skills and knowledge to succeed as global citizens.
