Job Description

Job Title: Adolescent Humanities Guide
Level: 7/8th Grade
Classification: 1.0 FTE, exempt regular salaried employee - (Salary DOE)
Compensation: Commensurate with experience and education
Licensure: Licensed in English Language Art 6-12
Reports to: Adolescent Program Director
School Year: 2024-2025

General description:
The Adolescent Humanities guide prepares the learning environment for students to engage in social studies in a culturally responsive and relevant context.

Essential Responsibilities Include:
Understand developmental tendencies of the adolescent student, implement student centered and inquiry based learning opportunities and curriculum writing, and systematic best practices in humanities teaching with a diverse perspective
Teaches Humanities with an expertise in Language Arts and one elective to 7th and 8th grade students
Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects using formal and informal assessment data obtained from students.
Uses a variety of culturally relevant practices to support content standards and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
Creates a classroom environment and research-based program of study that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required school guidelines.
Implements all policies and rules governing student life and conduct both in the school and on field trips.
Conducts or participates in needed parent conferences and telephone conferences.
Serves as an advisor to an advisory of 7th and 8th grade students, including overseeing and supporting students in experiential learning and reflection.
Interest and willingness to engage in trips and expeditionary and experiential learning with students, desire to be part of a team of professional educators who collaborate and create an environment that serves students holistically.

Attends and participates in:
The Odyssey” A 4-5 day trip (with overnights) in September with the students and staff in the ⅞ program.
Theater Intensive: A month-long theater program where students put on a theater production.
The Bike Trip: A 4-5 day trip (with overnights) in June where students complete a 100 mile bike and camping trip.

Professional Development responsibilities:
Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through professional development activities.
Participates in discussions or activities focused on using research to improve literacy.
Participates in staff development focused on delivery of literacy intervention and assessment.
Works toward continuous learning in Anti-bias, Anti-racist teaching and learning, culturally relevant pedagogy, and standards-based grading.
Participate in appropriate Montessori training, as needed. May involve travel.
Other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Supervisor

Qualifications

Qualifications:
Valid Minnesota Teaching License, English-Language Arts 6-12
Licensure and/or experience in Humanities, Literature, ELA, Social Studies instruction
Specifically interested in Montessori
Student Centered Learning
Culturally Relevant instruction

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with students individually and in small groups
Montessori experience
Experience with standards-based grading
Understanding of Anti-Racist and Anti Biased knowledge, practices, and competencies
