Job Description
OVERVIEW: In this role you will serve the mission of Oshki Ogimaag Community School to create a learning environment of excellence based upon traditional teachings. Rooted in Anishinaabe language and culture you will: prepare students through hands-on, community-based projects to be lifelong learners that reach their personal and academic potential; preserve the Anishinaabe language and culture; contribute to the wellness of future generations.
The teacher is responsible for providing an educational environment that fosters academic and social/emotional growth and development, in alignment with the mission of the school.
Ideal candidates will have knowledge and understanding of Ojibwe language and cultural traditions, and the traditional seasonal activities of the Anishinaabe (however, this is not a requirement, training will be provided).
RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develop and implement engaging lessons plans in alignment with OOCS’s curriculum (Open-Up Resources for Reading and Math), meet MN standards, and are in alignment with the mission of OOCS.
Weekly lesson plans will be submitted to the Google Drive.
Provide individualized, differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
Foster a safe and inclusive classroom community environment conducive to learning.
Utilize effective classroom management techniques, within the Responsive Classroom framework, to promote positive behavior and self-regulation.
Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to support academic growth.
Collaborate with colleagues, families, and administrators to ensure student success.
Incorporate technology and other resources to enhance learning experience, while teaching media literacy and meeting OOCS’s expectations of reduced screen time and hands-on learning.
Participate meaningfully in professional development opportunities to continuously improve teaching practices.
Collaborate with special ecuvcation teacher to ensure IEPs are being followed, curriculum is modified appropriately and accommodations are being provided.
Model professional and ethical standards in all interactions with students, families, peers, and community.
Excellent and professional written and oral communication with students, families, peers, and community.
Professionally meet deadlines and honor schedules.
Maintain effective and efficient documentation and record keeping.
Meet Environmental Education goals for classroom, and works with the team to support meeting all goals per OOCS’s contractual obligation to our authorizer, Osprey Wilds.
Conduct conferences as scheduled by OOCS
Attend IEP meetings
Complete paperwork and documentation on deadline as assigned by the Special Education Teacher for Child Study, Pre-referral Interventions, Evaluations and preparation for IEP meetings.
Complete reports to the Board within the deadline set by Administration.
Collaborate in a meaningful way, in curriculum mapping, events planning, and staff meetings.
Complete assessments on-time per the schedule set by Administration.
Honor the mission of OOCS in all work with students and works to integrate the mission across disciplines.
Weekly communication to families (‘cc Director and Assistant Director) with an overview of the week, reflection on the week before, pictures, and important classroom-specific news or notes.
Create/update student portfolios.
Follow a tiered system of support (for academic and behaviors) that is in accordance with OOCS policies.
Other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Education or related field
Valid teaching license
Proven experience in supporting students with special education needs
Strong written skills for developing lesson plans, assessments, reports, and family communication
Experience in providing academic support to meet individual needs.
Proficiency in classroom management techniques.
Knowledge of math, literacy education, and MDE-approved assessment and standardized testing practices
Familiarity with library services and resources for educational enrichment
Passion for working with students and and promoting their holistic development
Knowledge and respect for Anishinaabe language and traditions (or a willingness to learn, partnered with respect)
Institution Description
Oshki Ogimaag Community School was officially declared a public charter school by the state of Minnesota on November 10, 2008.
The local Community identified the need to provide the children and families of Grand Portage with a local, high-quality option for education, with an emphasis on the Anishinaabe language and culture. Oshki Ogimaag Community School was developed through a grassroots initiative which gained support from the Grand Portage Tribal Government and Community.
Located in a small Anishinaabe Community on the Grand Portage Reservation and authorized by Osprey Wilds, students receive a complete education while attending a “school without walls,” utilizing the school building for classrooms and Ojibwe homeland as an extended campus.
The physical environment of the Grand Portage Reservation is a dynamic learning center, teaching students about the natural environment, history, and interconnectedness of all peoples, things, and beings.
