Job Description

Position Title: Special Education Advisor
Reports To: Personnel Team
Responsible To: EOC School Board and Special Education Director
Position Summary
The Special Education Advisor provides online instruction and support to a caseload of 14-16 students with special needs. This role includes daily online meetings with students, ensuring they receive appropriate services, accommodations, and interventions. The Special Education Advisor is responsible for case management, compliance with federal and state special education laws, and collaboration with staff, parents, and paraprofessionals to support student success.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Special Education Services
Provide direct special education services to 14-16 students, meeting with them online daily.
Identify students who may have disabilities and coordinate the evaluation process.
Conduct assessments to determine eligibility and develop individualized education programs (IEPs) in collaboration with the school team.
Plan and implement individualized programs for students who qualify and recommend resources for those who do not.
Organize and lead all required special education meetings, including IEP and evaluation meetings.
Maintain regular communication with parents regarding meetings, student progress, and concerns.
Ensure compliance with all federal and state special education requirements, completing necessary training and documentation.
Support special education students in academic projects from proposal to presentation.
Assist general education staff in understanding special education regulations, terminology, and the importance of maintaining the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) for students.
Design and implement lessons and activities that meet the individualized needs of students on IEPs.
Assist general education staff with curricular modifications based on student abilities, ensuring access to appropriate educational materials and instruction.

Paraprofessional Supervision
Supervise and delegate tasks to paraprofessionals, ensuring effective student support.
Develop and adjust paraprofessional schedules as needed.
Lead weekly meetings with paraprofessionals, providing guidance and addressing challenges.

Collaboration & School Involvement
Serve on at least two school teams, contributing to school-wide initiatives and student support.
Participate in weekly staff meetings and collaborate with colleagues to enhance student learning.
Effectively use collaboration and communication tools, including Google Suite, Big Blue Button, Headrush, IXL, and ALEKS.
Maintain competency in online instructional tools and model effective virtual communication.
Adhere to directives from EdVisions and the Board of Directors.
Chaperone field trips, school events, and proctor testing as needed

Qualifications

Education & Licensure
Must hold or be eligible for a Minnesota special education teaching license.

Experience & Skills
Experience in online education or willingness to learn online instructional methods.
Strong case management, assessment, and compliance skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, staff, and external agencies.
Proficiency in Google Suite, Big Blue Button, Headrush, IXL, and ALEKS.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently while maintaining effective teamwork.

Supervision Level
The Special Education Advisor’s evaluation process will align with evaluations for the rest of the staff and will include a yearly professional development plan.
Works independently under the guidance of the Personnel Team, with accountability to the Special Education Director and EOC School Board.
