History
City Academy was established in 1992 to meet the growing need for academic programming aimed at young adults seeking a small school with small classes, which would enable them to have productive and meaningful roles within the community. City Academy has been a YOUTHBUILD program since 1993. The school was founded by teachers and designed in cooperation with the students.
City Academy was the first charter school to begin operation in the country. Students have typically experienced challenges in traditional academic settings so the focus is on providing opportunities for students to either attend postsecondary institutions or begin employment. The school shares facilities with a neighborhood recreation center, and utilizes community resources as much as possible.
