Mission
The Mission of Great Expectations School (GES) was created to facilitate student learning through the development of a safe, supportive school culture, implementation of best teaching practices, and involvement of parents and community members in public education.
The mission of the school is to develop in each child: (1) A lifelong love of learning; (2) A strong sense of self; (3) Mastery of the academic building blocks; (4) Critical thinking and problem-solving skills; (5) The ability to nurture meaningful relationships with others; (6) An understanding and appreciation of the natural world; (7) A strong commitment to being a contributing member of a community.
The Vision at Great Expectations School is “Growing Hearts and Minds, One Child at a Time”, which comes to life in the development of a learning community that engages students based on their individual strengths, passions, needs, and learning styles.
Programming Notes: The school offers each student: (1) A safe, nurturing school environment and a culture of mutual respect based on the Responsive Classroom approach to social and emotional development; (2) A variety of teaching methods that flow from our understanding that students learn and express themselves in different ways; (3) Guided reflection on learning experiences in order to develop interactive, authentic assessment of student work; (4) Multi-age classroom groupings where difference is accepted, collaboration is encouraged, and interdependence is practiced; (5) Hands-on, relevant learning experiences that help create strong connections between subject areas and deepen student understanding; (6) Flexible-paced learning and academic differentiation that responds to individual student achievement and ability rather than chronological age; (7) Inclusive learning environments where students of all abilities are members of a classroom community that supports the needs of each student.
