At Prairie Creek Community School, their All School Book Club uses the power of picture books to bring the school community together, offering authentic opportunities to explore values, build shared language, and learn equity concepts which permeate beyond the classroom. Books such as Lubna and Pebble, A Family Like Ours, and The Most Beautiful Thing are carefully selected by a teacher committee, in collaboration with SPED teachers, to ensure accessibility, opportunities for multi-age engagement, and community connections that build upon the story’s focus and theme. This school-wide practice allows for inclusive multi-age teams that have “courageous conversations,” which revolve around relevant, real-world topics and allow students to study and learn from one another, as well as members of their community.
